Week 7 Part 1: ‘Can You Give Plants Sprite?’
Are you more introverted or extroverted? Intuitive or sensitive? A thinker or a feeler? Are you more of a perceiver towards people or a one to judge based on decisions? Here at the Crossroads office in Chicago, we have quite the mix of personalities. Our beginning days at the office were spent doing activities to discover where each one of us stood on a scale. This scale is the Myers-Briggs personality test. The heart behind taking this test was not only for us to discover more about ourselves as people, but also to see how we, as one team, will function together in small groups.
Our mix of personalities sparks something new each week. The spark has ignited a flame this week in the office. That flame being: Office Quotes of the Week. Basic rules of the game: Whenever an intern says something either unusually weird or a phrase that is worthy of a laugh-out-loud reaction, we record it on our whiteboard. The quotes live there all week for us to dwell on. Some of the quotes we have gathered from this week may not make sense but include:
Highlighted quotes from the week:
-Bri: “Get behind me, Satan!
-Taylor: “I’ve been saying stupid things for seven weeks!”
-Jae: “Can I give plants sprite?… [To Pearl] I value life. I don’t try random experiments like that.”
Recording these humorous quotes over the week serve an increasing importance in the office as the weeks go by. These quotes are reminders of the multiple personalities we are surrounded by and also serve as a beautiful reminder of the magnificent community God has blessed us with.
Highlighted quotes from the week:
-Pearl: “Taylor, your feet are pretty”
-Molly: “Why is my biscuit salty?!”
-Grace: [To Molly] “It’s the tears of the chickens!
-Taylor: “Is there such a thing as too much Josh Coy?”
In the secular world, laughing and joking around with your co-workers and even your bosses is frowned upon and often avoided because humor is rendered differently from person to person. Adults working in the field often worry about saying the wrong thing or attempting a joke because it can be taken the wrong way, thus increasing the possibility of being fired. At Crossroads, we have the freedom to work hard on all our projects while still being ourselves. We do not have to worry about the heaps of trouble we will get in for goofing around on the job because our leadership encourages us in ways to hold ourselves accountable.
And we do just that. When brainstorming themes for conferences, we bust out Play-Doh, hand puppets, gravity sand, and stress-relieving balls to stimulate creativity without completely draining our minds. These outlets allow us to have fun while still continuing the production of our projects. It takes a lot of bad ideas to come up with a few good ones. It took a couple hundred ‘Moms spaghetti’ ideas to come up with the finalized theme for IndyCC. These ideas all stem from the different personalities that each intern brings to the Crossroads office weekly and for that, we are thankful.
