Kickball: Cheaters never prosper
June 21 brought with it the annual staff vs student kickball game at CSM 15. Students, dressed in blue, marched onto the kickball field at Sheridan Park while cheering about our inevitable victory. The staff wore black and seemed thoroughly unimpressed with our pomp and circumstance.
After a quick introduction of the specifics of the game by a staff member who was acting as the referee, the fun began. Students had to line up to kick in guy-girl order, and everyone was split into seven outfield teams, each with equal amounts of guys and girls. Everyone had to kick and play in the outfield at least once or else it resulted in an automatic loss.
Overall, it was a rather close game. For quite a while it appeared as though the students would emerge victoriously and defeat the staff for the first time in CSM history, with the students taking an 8-6 lead into the late innings. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. Following a staff rally, the students trailed 12-8 with one batter to go when something unexpected happened.
We were told we had two minutes to get off the field. Apparently someone had complained about our large and rowdy crowd on the baseball field. While both sides didn’t want to see the game end that way, we left the field without protest. After leaving, the staff took us to a local place in Little Italy to get Italian Ice. On the way to get our post-game treat, there was hope of a continuation of our game. But our hopes were dashed with a GroupMe message declaring the game final and the staff the winners. The news was hard to hear, but both sides had a good time. The students were victorious at heart.
